HOW TO START A MONEY MAKING BLOG
1. CHOOSING YOUR NICHE
First and foremost, you need to decide what your niche will be. Niche is just a fancy word for what your main topic of writing will be.
I did some research and found that these are blog niches that get good traffic and make money:
- Health and fitness
- How to make money
- Personal finance/saving
- Food
- Beauty and fashion
- Lifestyle
- Personal development
- Parenting
That is not to say that bloggers who blog about other things do not make money, but apparently, these are the most successful niches if you want to make money blogging.
2. WHAT IS YOUR BRAND GOING TO BE?
Now that you’ve got your niche down, you need to think about your brand as a whole.
First, pick a name. This name will have to be incorporated in your URL and will literally be the name of your brand, so do not just pick the first name that comes to mind. Take your time and pick one that will represent your brand.
Next, think about how you want your logo to look like, what colors you want to use in your website, and how you would like your website to look. Some people prefer a more crowded site, while others prefer minimalism.
The reason why all of this matters is because you want your website to look cohesive and like all the elements belong together. It makes it look more professional, and is easy on the eyes.
You want your readers to get a good first impression when reading your blog for the first time, in order for them to come back for more content.
3. WHERE IS YOUR BLOG GOING TO BE HOSTED?
This is where it gets a little bit more technical. Not to worry, I am going to walk you through the entire process.
Web hosting is a place on the internet where your blog is going to “live”, for lack of a better term. Every website needs hosting, that’s just the way the interwebs work.
Since I started blogging back in February, I made the choice to change hosts because my initial host wasn’t what I expected it to be.
Since March, I have been blogging through WordPress and my blog has been hosted by Bluehost.
I can honestly say that the combination of the two has been the best decision I’ve made about blogging to date.
Here are some great things I have discovered about Bluehost:
- The customer service is absolutely amazing. Since I’m a self-taught blogger, I have ran into my fair share of technical difficulties, and the customer support have always helped me out in a timely manner.
- Bluehost is very easy to use (you will see that when we get to the technical part below).
- You can monetize your website without any issues or approvals.
- If you want to run ads on your site, you can do that.
- The themes that you can install for your website are endless.
- You can request a refund within 30 days if you don’t like it! AwesomeAwesome
- Head over to Bluehost and click on Get Started.
Once you do that, you will be asked to choose your plan. I use the 3.95/month plan and am super happy with it!
Next, you will choose your free domain. If you already have one, type it in the second box.
You will then be asked to fill in all your information. Make sure all your information is correct, and proceed to the next step.
Check that you have chosen the correct plan on this page, and if you like (and I strongly recommend this step), agree to pay the extra $0.99 per month to keep your domain protected.
The next step is to fill out your payment information. Read and then click the little box below to say that you have read the terms of service, and proceed to the next page.
Almost there! Now, you will be asked to create a strong password. This password will protect your site, so make sure it is a difficult one and that you write it down somewhere.
Now for some fun! You can look through the themes on this page and choose one which you think will work well with your website.
And you’re done! You’ve just created your very own little place on the internet. Log in, and click on Start Building to, well, start building your new website!
On the dashboard page click on “Bluehost” on the top left, and you will be taken to the Bluehost tools page. Here you can start writing your posts.
I recommend writing about 10-15 posts before launching your website. You’d want some content on your site before publishing it so that your readers can stick around for a longer time on your site.
Only launch your website once you have some content on it. Remember, blogging is hard work. It takes time, dedication and effort, but it is well worth it.
Your next step after launching your website will be monetizing it.
